Purpose

Freedom of speech, tolerance, intellectual diversity, and a commitment to the pursuit of truth are the lifeblood of a healthy academic community. In recent decades, many universities have committed themselves to new social and political principles that have, in too many cases, begun to eclipse these values.

Therefore, at this point in time, there is a need to reaffirm the core values of the university, in order to better provide for their protection and nurturance going forward.

The Commitment to Academic Freedom and Tolerance is meant to serve this purpose. It frames a set of principles that, when upheld, foster a vibrant intellectual community and help educational organizations to fulfill their essential mission.

All professors, instructors, and staff affiliated with an institution of higher learning – as well as professional organizations composed of such individuals – are invited to endorse the Commitment as a sign of support for its principles. Any organization  is welcome to adopt the Commitment.
